BETWEEN SILENT AND POPULOUS: SCENES OF LIGHT, COLOUR AND NIGHT

Night photography offers interesting opportunities and different styles of light that allow a photographer to capture a unique and striking scene. Melbourne-based photographers Madeline Bowser and Ben Metherell present a selection of nighttime photographs from Australia and the world, showing nightlife, the quiet areas and, most of all, light.

BIOGRAPHY

Madeline Bowser is a travel photographer who specialises in city and landscapes, both colour and in black and white. Formally trained in fine art photography, her photographs represent her personal experiences and aim to freeze time, depicting often overlooked perspectives.

Ben Metherell grew up taking photos, but fell out of touch with photography in the digital age. When he started using a vintage medium format camera, he rediscovered the joy of taking time to photograph. He now shoots entirely on film with a variety of cameras from all over the world.

About Madeline Bowser

I've been photographing with film for what seems like forever ... well since the late 90's. I shoot both film and digital, but film is where my heart is and I get the most ongoing enjoyment from and what I enjoy sharing and teaching to others. I also travel the world hunting down old cameras and unique locations to photograph in, and exhibit and sell my travel photographs.

When out shooting film, I often get asked the questions 'can you still buy film?', 'I thought film stopped being made 10 years ago' and 'why would you want to shoot film when you can shoot digital'.

My answers are, 'yes', 'no, it didn't', and 'I also shoot digital, both have their place in my mind'.
